Harry's Bar in Venice

Harry's Bar in Venice is a familiar refuge for Richard Cantwell, a place he makes his way to despite physical pain and recognizes as home. Its role is defined by that return: it gathers practical news, a dry joke about happiness, and the companionship of Count Andrea into a single destination, without suggesting that familiarity can resolve Cantwell's deeper unease.

A Place to Find Someone

When Cantwell asks the hotel waiter to call and find the Contessa, the answer is that she is not at home and may be found at Harry's Bar in Venice. The exchange gives the bar a practical function as a known meeting place in the city. Cantwell answers that everything on earth can be found there; the waiter's qualification is that happiness may be the exception. The joke makes the bar sound abundant in people and possibility, while setting a limit on what it can provide.

The Journey Back

Cantwell decides to go to the bar. On the walk, he feels twinges as he climbs and crosses a bridge, but keeps his stride and follows the route toward it. Facing the wind, he breathes deeply and thinks about the oxygen in the air. The physical effort gives the arrival weight: he pulls open the door, gets inside, and recognizes that he has made it again and is home. The return is therefore not merely a change of venue; it is a small, hard-won restoration of belonging.

Familiarity and Companionship

Inside, Count Andrea greets Cantwell with an affectionate, irreverent address, and Cantwell answers in the same teasing register. Their exchange makes the bar a setting for established companionship rather than an anonymous public room. Its familiarity also sits beside Cantwell's plans to hunt ducks before first light two days later: the bar belongs to the recurring rhythms of a life that continues through bodily discomfort and uncertainty. The waiter's joke remains the place's sharpest qualification. Harry's Bar can offer a welcome and a sense of home, but the text does not make it a guarantee of happiness.
